It’s been a while! Jetzt hab ich schon fast einen Monat nicht mehr von mir hören lassen. Das hat eigentlich auch nur einen Grund: es gab im letzten Monat einfach nicht viel zu erzählen.

Gut, am 1. Februar war die Superbowl! Aber die wird mittlerweile in österreich genau so gefeiert wie in den USA. Trotzdem schreib ich dazu vielleicht ein paar Gsatzerl. Mit den Seahawks und den Patriots waren zwei Teams in der Superbowl, die Minnesotans eher peripher tangieren. Hätten es die Packers ins Finale geschafft, wär das schon eine andere Geschichte. Nichts desto trotz schauen sich natürlich trotzdem die meisten Studenten die Superbowl an. Es ist immerhin DAS Sportereignis des Jahres. Wir hatten demnach die Wahl uns das Spiel im Stehen auf Großleinwand im Campuspub oder aber in gemütlicher Runde im Apartment anzusehen. Normalerweise hätt ich mir schon den Stehplatz angetan aber meine Roommates waren etwas weniger motiviert und so haben wir uns das Spiel im kleinen Kreise angeschaut. Bevors losging gab es allerdings ein „Superbowl-Buffet“ in der Kantine. Fritiertes Zeug so weit das Auge reicht und natürlich sehr sehr fleischlastig. Während dem Spiel gab es dann noch mehr Snacks und natürlich Bier! Wie das Spiel ausgegangen ist, brauch ich niemandem erzählen. Der Worst call ever hat mir persönlich zwar ein bisschen den Abend versaut aber mit ein bisschen Beerpong und anderen Trinkspielen konnte ich mich darüber hinwegtrösten.
Was gibt es sonst noch zu erzählen?! Springbreak steht an! Ich bin schon sehr gespannt wie das wirklich wird. Nach langem planen hab ich mich nämlich dazu entschlossen nach South Padre, Texas zu roadtrippen. Mehr dazu aber dann wenn es vorbei ist.
Ah vielleicht auch interessant: Ich durfte in den letzten Wochen zum ersten mal Bekanntschaft mit der amerikanischen Bürokratie machen! Und zwar gleich doppelt! Einerseits mussten wir für Fulbright unseren „Tax File Report“ abgeben. Das ganze ist eigentlich leichter als gedacht, ein paar Formulare ausfüllen (Passierschein A38) und dann vom Notar beglaubigen lassen. Vom Notar? Vom Notar! Mein erster Gedanken: „Ja oida, ich schaffs ja schon net mal zum Supermarkt. Wo soll ich jetzt in der Einöde einen Notar finden?“ Tjaaa, ich wurde positiv überrascht. Nach einer E-Mail an meine Department Koordinatorin (Mary ist die beste, sei an der Stelle erwähnt) stellte sich heraus, dass wir einen Campus-Notar haben! Hah, easy. Einen Stock tiefer und eine Sache von 5 Minuten. Und da sag nochmal einer Steuereklärungen seien nervig 😛
Andererseits durfte ich auch zum ersten Mal von unserer Fulbright-Versicherung Gebrauch machen! (YAAAY) Ich hab mir nämlich geschickterweise meinen Lieblingsfinger (mitte, rechte Hand) gebrochen. Auch das Gesundheitsystem ist voll okay, wenn man denn eine Versicherung hat. Das ist nämlich nach dem Namen und dem Anliegen die dritte Frage die man gestellt bekommt. Übrigens, der Einfachheit halber haben wir natürlich auch ein Krankenhaus (offiziel „Health Center“) am Campus. Also ausgestattet sind die Unis wirklich top, dass muss man schon sagen (bei 50.000$ Tuition im Jahr aber auch verständlich). Also Schiene drauf von Frau Doktor, 2 Wochen drauf lassen und gut is. Gibt auf jeden Fall schlimmeres wofür man seine Versicherung hernehmen muss. (LG an Marina falls du das liest, hoff der Hand geht’s gut ;))
So und das wars auch schon wieder, leider ist das Campusleben im Moment wirklich recht eintönig. Ich hoffe, dass ich dann in zwei Wochen nach Springbreak wieder etwas mehr zu berichten habe!

It’s been a while! I haven’t posted anything in almost a month! There is good reason for that: In the past weeksthere just wasn’t anything interesting to post about.
Alright fine, we had the Superbowl on the 1st of Februray. But nowadays people celebrate that in Austria just as they do in the US. However I might as well write a few lines about it. With the Seahawks and the Patriots we had two teams in the Superbowl that Minnesotans couldn’t care less about. If the Packers would’ve made it, this would be a whole nother story. Nevertheless most students of course still watch the Superbowl. It is still THE sporting event of the year. We had the choice between watching the game on a big screen and standing in the Campuspub or with a few people in our comfy apartment. Normally I would stand just for the sake of a better atmosphere but my friends and roommates were less motivated so we decided to watch it in an apartment on a slightly smaller TV. Before the game there was a Superbowl themed buffet with more fried things than you could imagine and of course also very meat-heavy. During the game we had even more snacks and of course plenty of beer. I don’t have to tell you how the game ended. Let’s just say the worst call ever kind of ruined my night but with beerpong and some other drinking games I was fine in the end.
What else is there to write about? Well, we have springbreak coming up in a week. I’m pretty pumped already. After some planning I’ve decided to go on a roadtrip to South Padre, Texas! More on that once the whole thing is over.
Oh yeah, maybe mildly interesting: I had the pleasure to experience American bureaucracy on first hand. On two occasions in two weeks! Firstly we had to file our Tax Report for the Fulbright Programm. The whole thing is actually much easier than I thought. Just fill in some forms and then get it notarized by a public notary. A public notary? A public notary! My first thoughts were: “Holy cow, I can’t even make it to the supermarket without help. How am I gonna find a public notary in the middle of nowhere?” Well, I was surprised! One e-Mail to my department coordinator (Mary is the best, btw) later I found out that we have a public notary on campus. Just one floor down. 5 minutes later the whole thing was done. Now who’s gonna tell me that filing Tax reports is hard? 😛
Secondly I got to use my Fulbright insurance for the first time! (YAAAY) I (clumsy how I am) broke my favorite finger (middle one, right hand). Even health care is pretty alright, as long as you have insurance. Because after your name and your issue that’s the third thing they’re going to ask you. By the way, we even have a hospital (officially it is a health center) on campus. You have to give it to the private Universities: They are really well equipped! (Which is understandable if you pay 50k a year). So the Doctor put a splint on, keep it on wor two weeks and you should be alright. There are definitely worse things you need your insurance for. (Hi to Marina, hope your hand’s alright ;))
And that’s about it for now since campus life is pretty boring right now. I hope I have more to tell you once I am back from springbreak in two weeks!
